Released in 1995, "New Moon Daughter" was Cassandra Wilson's second album for Blue Note and extended her pilgrimage beyond conventional jazz repertoire, breaking down the barriers between musical styles, winning a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. The album contains songs by U2 and the Monkees, Hoagy Carmichael, Hank Williams and Neil Young, the blues legends Son House and Robert Johnson, the Billie Holiday classic “Strange Fruit” and, of course, original compositions.
