For “Droppin' Science”, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of the Roots got to sift through the legendary Blue Note collections to get to the bottom of some of hip-hop's greatest samples. Because the sounds on this album are not only great, but above all familiar to many from other songs, so that the track name may not immediately spring to mind. Included are, for example, Ronnie Foster's “Mystic Brew” (sampled by A Tribe Called Quest for “Electric Relaxation”), Donald Byrd's “Think Twice” (sampled by J Dilla, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Main Source), David McCallum's “The Edge” (also known as the monster sample for Dr. Dre + Snoop Dogg's “Next Episode”), Grant Green's “Down Here On The Ground” (used by A Tribe Called Quest and Madonna), Jeremy Steig's “Howling For Judy” (aka the killer flute sample on the Beastie Boys song “Get It Together”), and Lou Donaldson's “Who's Makin' Love” (used by Notorious B.I.G., Marley Marl, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J Blige and Run-DMC). “Dropping Science” is therefore not only a history lesson, but also a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
