"The middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone!" That's what the critic Leonard Feather once called Hank Mobley, who died in 1986. That doesn't sound particularly flattering at first, but it was only meant to express the fact that Mobley's phrasing ranked between two other tenor sax champions: the "heavyweight" John Coltrane and the "lightweight" Stan Getz. On "Workout", Mobley presented himself in 1961, seconded by a quintet of young modernists (guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones), in captivating top form.
