An album that fully lived up to its title "The Turnaround!". Because it documented an important turnaround in the playing style of tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. The first session, in which two pieces were recorded in March 1963, was made by Mobley a few months after he had left Miles Davis' band. His tone here is still round and warm. When he then went back into the studio in February 1965 to record the remaining four tracks for the album, the tenor player played much more pointedly, bluesier and with more bite. Both times Mobley was able to work with absolutely top-class partners: on the first session with Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren and Philly Joe Jones, on the second with Freddie Hubbard, Barry Harris, Paul Chambers and Billy Higgins.
