Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers Free For All
Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers underwent so many reincarnations over the decades that it is difficult to say which of these line-ups was really the best. A hot favorite among critics and jazz fans, however, is the ensemble that Blakey formed in 1961 with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Reggie Workman. The sextet recorded the album "Free For All" exactly 50 years ago in February 1964, when there was already an almost telepathic understanding between the musicians.
