Nels Cline, guitarist of the US independent rock band Wilco, who is ranked 82nd in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", is a jazz guitarist in his "second life", and has been on the world's most renowned label in the genre since 2016: Blue Note Records.
He has now named his fourth in a series of stylistically diverse Blue Note albums after his latest ensemble "Consentrik Quartet", with Ingrid Laubrock (saxophones), Chris Lightcap (bass) & Tom Rainey (drums), whose debut recording this is.
With the "Consentrik Quartet", Nels Cline shows another facet of his jazz personality, after releasing an atmospheric tribute to pianist Bill Evans, guitarist Jim Hall and arranger Gil Evans in 2016 with the string album "Lovers", followed by his ensemble Nels Cline 4 consisting of guitarist Julian Lage and rhythm section Scott Colley (bass) and Tom Rainey (drums) in 2018 with "Currents, Constellations", and then recorded his third Blue Note album "Share The Weath" (2020) with a combo called The Nels Cline Singers, although neither the guitarist himself nor his fellow musicians, punk-jazz saxophonist Skerik, keyboardist Brian Marsella, bassist Trevor Dunn, drummer Scott Amendola and percussionist Cyro Baptista could be heard singing and instead shone with improvised, grooving tracks between jazz, rock and avant-garde.
