Actually, Donald Byrd had done everything right in 1961 when recording his second Blue Note album: He put together an excellent quintet with the baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams and the young pianist Herbie Hancock and offered an entertaining program of his own compositions and some standards. Nevertheless, for unknown reasons, the recordings were not to see the light of day until eighteen years later. Which is all the more astonishing because Hancock (for whom this was only the second recording ever) became one of the label's driving forces shortly afterwards with his Blue Note debut "Takin' Off" and began to write jazz history as a member of Miles Davis' second legendary quintet.
