The 1950s had been a lost decade for tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon. His career, which he had started so brilliantly as a bebopper in the early '40s, had come to an almost complete standstill due to his heroin addiction and numerous stints in prison. The tide did not turn for him until he was released on parole in early 1960 and went to New York, where he was given a new chance by producer Alfred Lion at Blue Note Records. Gordon knew how to make the most of it. Within a short time, he recorded the albums "Doin' Allright," "Dexter Calling," "Landslide," "Go!" and "A Swingin' Affair" for the label, which restored his reputation. He then moved to Europe, but from there he kept returning to New York to record more records for Blue Note. Like in May 1965, when he recorded the two albums "Clubhouse" and "Gettin' Around" in three intense days at Rudy Van Gelder's studios in Englewood Cliffs in New Jersey with his excellent bebop band.
