The fact that Nina Simone, who died in 2003, is still referred to today as the "High Priestess Of Soul" is thanks to the title of this album, which was originally released on Philips in 1965/66 but is now considered to be part of Verve. However, the singer and pianist herself did not like this term because she felt labeled and stylistically restricted by it. On "High Priestess Of Soul", she offered an eclectic mix of jazz, pop, soul, blues, gospel and folk. The songs are accompanied by a large band directed and arranged by Hal Mooney. Highlights of the repertoire included Nat Adderley and Oscar Brown's "Work Song", Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" and Simone's own spiritual compositions "Come Ye" and "Take Me To The Water".
