From 1960 to 1965, McCoy Tyner was a permanent fixture in John Coltrane's various ensembles. And of course he was also a member of the saxophonist's legendary first quartet, which recorded numerous albums for Impulse! Records, whose influence on jazz and music in general continues to this day. After a creative hiatus in which he did not record any albums of his own (he had previously made six for Impulse!), the pianist returned in 1967 with “The Real McCoy”, his first album for Blue Note. And he immediately succeeded in creating a masterpiece that lived up to its punning title. In a brilliant quartet with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Ron Carter and his old Coltrane buddy Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner recorded five original compositions, all of which became classics of modern jazz: “Passion Dance”, “Contemplation”, “Four By Five”, “Search For Peace” and “Blues On The Corner”.
