It is no coincidence that Elvin Jones was once jokingly referred to as John Coltrane's minister for creative percussion. From 1960 to 1966, the drummer was a driving force in the saxophonist's legendary quartet. Jones acted as a kind of link between the hard bop scene and the emerging avant-garde; he knew how to play freely while still swinging powerfully in a modern way. On his own albums, too, he always proved to be an innovative musician who never lost sight of tradition. The drummer recorded the 1973 album “Mr. Jones” with a truly breathtaking band, including Mahavishnu Orchestra keyboardist Jan Hammer, saxophonists Dave Liebman, Steve Grossman, George Coleman, Pepper Adams and Joe Farrell, flugelhornist Thad Jones, bassist Gene Perla and percussionist Carlos “Patato” Valdes.
