On a whim, Stan Getz asked Astrud Gilberto, who had actually only accompanied her husband João to the studio, to sing “The Girl From Ipanema” for him in 1963. The album “Getz/Gilberto” and the song were such an overwhelming success that Verve offered Astrud Gilberto her own recording contract. On her debut album, she interpreted some of the greatest bossa novas and sambas with her delicate voice and the support of heavyweights such as João Gilberto, Tom Jobim, João Donato and Bud Shank.
