"The John Coltrane Quartet Plays" was recorded in 1965, shortly after the completion of the "Love Supreme" album. John Coltrane's intention was to record another album of standard material, but when the recordings were complete, they included "Nature Boy", a Disney classic ("Chim Chim Cheree") and Coltrane's compositions "Brazilia" and "Song of Praise", whose hymn-like character already points to the saxophonist's late work. "The John Coltrane Quartet Plays" was the last album by the classic John Coltrane Quartet to be released during his lifetime.
